    South Royalton

Royalton is a place like no other.

It is a community in the strongest sense of the word, neighbors helping neighbors in a town where our neighbors could be anyone from anywhere in the world.

Vermont Law and Graduate School (Vermont’s only law school) makes its home here, drawing students from all over the world, creating a diverse multicultural community.

We live surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

    Don’t believe me?

Hike to Kent’s Ledge during foliage season and take in the valley below or walk along the White River and see the yellow, red and orange reflected on the surface of the clear water.

My name is Katie Merrill. I'm the Director of Admissions at Vermont Law School. I wanted to give you a little tour and talk to you a little bit about housing. So welcome to South Royalton, Vermont. This is example of housing in Vermont. This is Mr. & Mrs. Manning's. They have several buildings here in town. A lot of the housing here is New England based farm houses.

Let's see if they're home. Hello, Mrs. Manning!-- Hello... Good-- Good.

We are one of several landlords in the village and have rented to Vermont Law students for many years actually over 35. We're happy to meet with incoming students and show them available apartments and can provide local information about the community as well. The community of landlords gather here. So we have your interest-- deep in our hearts. We want you to have healthy, happy housing. And this is an example of a terrific landlord that makes it possible.

    Thanks.[Soft Spoken]

    You're welcome.

This is one of my favorite houses in South Royalton. It's nicknamed the porch-- Coined for the lovely leather couches on the porch. These are Matt Daly's apartments. He's been renting for decades, campus right across the street. Most students live walking distance. These are fair price. They're usually between 500 and I think 1000 for a two bedroom, but he can give you more details.

Typical for New England towns are a center green. A lot of activities happen in our green here in South Royalton. As you can see behind me It's our first farmers market of the season. It's been a long spring. As we move throughout the summer, you'll have more and more farmers available. Many students will utilize CSA community shared agriculture boxes. Some students will work for their veggies and some students will purchase them through our local farmers. So we can walk through.

So this is one of my favorite buildings in South Royalton and it is also an apartment. The landlord has Kenya. She's an artist. She has a community about 15 minutes from here and she just purchased the South Royalton house, shared living and some individual apartments. It used to be a hotel a long time ago. We were a train depot and this was the big hotel. There is a pub, so we're hoping that the pub may reopen. But welcome, South Royalton house. In South Royalton, we have fine eats. One of our best establishments is the worthy burger, and I'm talking wood fired grilled burgers and french fries. It's the best place, craft beer and great local atmosphere. Hope you can join us here.

Alright, welcome to the worthy burger. Here at the worthy burger. We serve locally raised foods. We've been using the same beef prepare for the last several years VLS alum. Her and her family have 93 head of cattle for us up in Chelsea, Vermont, and we exclusively use their beef in our worthy burgers. Our buns are custom made for us. Another local shop up in Northfield. 18 draft beer, different cocktails, champagne wine. Congratulations your acceptance to VLS and we can't wait to see you here at the worthy burger in the South Royalton community.

South Royalton is a small town. Everywhere you go, they're going to know the sandwich you want to order or the type of coffee you like to drink. Big news. This is a brand new coffee shop. We're super excited. First branch coffee. Great coffee. Best part. They sell beer too. So come on in.

Here we are inside. Great coffee. VLS students. He actually shouldn't be working. Don't work your first year. Treats-- Lunch-- Beer tasting. Oh, just so happens. Here's the brewer for Upper Pass Brewery, we're doing a video for VLS students. Is there anything you want to say about your success?

    [INAUDIBLE]

This is Noy, he actually started doing with our master's program and he is going to join you in the 1L JD class.

    That's correct.

All right. We're also talking about housing. Where do you live?

I live five minutes out of town off Rick's road. So kind of far, but it's in five minutes.

    Is it a farm?

It's kind of like a farm. Yeah. My landlord sells free range eggs. So I guess that qualifies it as some sort of environment.

Do you get free eggs as rent?

    I do, every morning.

    Perfect.

    --Free laundry,

    And free Oh, free laundry.

    That's definitely a perk.

We do have a laundromat but housing with laundry facilities is a bonus.

    Absolutely. I would agree--

Thank you. What I love about South Royalton is you have options for post office space. You also have a little market. This is our Co-Op.

You can't beat the produce. You can't beat the items that you can purchase. Everything is local, organic, fresh. apples. We can go apple picking when you get here in September. Take me up on that offer. I'd love to have you. I want to introduce the general manager for the South Royalton Co-Op. We'd like to call it the So Row Co-Op. They have the best groceries. They have the best lunch specials. My favorite is chicken posole, and I also like the chicken pot pie. But, Adam if you have a few welcome words to our new students.

Welcome to the area. Thanks for coming. Hope to see you every day. Thank you for joining me today and letting me show you a little bit of what I call home. I hope to see you here in August. If you need any help, please contact me, admissions. I'm Katie, again, and I look forward to helping you find housing and enjoy your transition to Vermont.
